How to Hang a Chessboard on the Wall – Mounting Options, Pros & Cons
A wall-mounted chessboard is more than just a playing surface – it’s a statement piece, a blend of function and art. At ChessboArt, many of our models are designed to hang like paintings, but to enjoy both aesthetics and functionality, you need the right mounting method. Here’s a practical guide to the most common ways of hanging a chessboard, including their strengths and limitations.
Mounting Methods – Practical Overview
The image below shows several commonly used hanging methods. Each has its own purpose and best use case.
1. Recessed Metal Hanger (D-ring style)
➡ Best for heavy or premium models
This hanger is integrated into the back of the board’s frame and provides high stability and clean aesthetics. It’s the default system used in our ChessboArt800 and ChessboRN models.
- Flush against the wall
- Very secure and durable
- Compatible with concrete, brick, and drywall (with correct anchors)
Note: Requires two mounting holes and careful leveling.
2. Adhesive Mirror Hanger
➡ Best for light and minimal designs
Used in our ChessClub model. This adhesive-backed metal plate allows the board to hang completely flat against the wall — a great solution where drilling is not desired or possible.
- No screws or drilling required
- Invisible from the front
- Board hangs flat on the wall surface
Note: Recommended only for boards up to ~2.5–3 kg and for smooth wall surfaces.
3. Sawtooth Hanger, Hook, or Cord
➡ Great for standard tournament boards or DIY solutions
These classic hanging styles are quick and widely available, but come with trade-offs.
- Board will sit slightly away from the wall
- Requires screwing into the board frame
- May not be suitable for MDF or veneered boards
Important: Many chessboards that look like wood are actually made of particle board with veneer. Avoid using long screws that may puncture the surface. Short screws must be used carefully and never overloaded.
Installation Tips
- Always check the board’s weight before choosing a hanger
- Match anchors to your wall type (brick, drywall, concrete, etc.)
- Use a level to ensure proper alignment – especially with double-point mounts
- If unsure, contact the manufacturer or get expert advice
