Condition of the Chess Clock

The chess clock is functional. Both sides and the locking mechanism are working. There is a slight crack on the casing. It is one of the most beautiful clocks we have ever had.

The clock has not been serviced, repaired, or adjusted by us. It runs slightly unevenly, but due to its age and uniqueness, we will only allow an experienced watchmaker to work on it.

The clock features an engraved plaque:

Holte Skakklub
1930-1931
2 Pr

We are currently seeking information about the history of this specific model. We suspect that the production date of the clock was earlier than 1930, and the plaque might indicate, for example, the date of presentation or serve as a keepsake.

Interesting Fact:

We have not been able to determine why this specific model of the chess clock does not have red hands that signal the end of time. It is currently the only known example without these hands.

Models of this clock from 1920 are known to already have red hands. From this fact, we infer that this model is over 100 years old and might be one of the earliest models or even a prototype.

If you have any photos or information regarding this model, we would greatly appreciate your contact. We strive to ensure that the information is accurate, but due to internet sources, we cannot take full responsibility for it. The clock is available and can be seen in our physical store. Online ordering is only possible after prior confirmation.

Chess Clock HAU (HAC) old German Chess Clock, Presumably before 1910-1930/1931!
According to us, it could be the last one in the world.

Tournament Chess Clock made by
HAU -Hamburg-Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik (HAU = Hamburg-American clock factory)

made in Germany

What we know about the clock:

The company HAU produced chess clocks with oak cases. HAU chess clocks can be recognized by the Crossed Arrows logo on the dial. Many companies also rebranded HAU chess clocks, such as Jaques in England, or used internal clock mechanisms from HAU, like Tanner. HAU/HAC solutions were copied by the Soviet Union, and you can find similarly designed clocks from the 1950s-60s originating from the Soviet Union.
