The Size of the Chess Set Matters

Size affects visibility and significantly influences the perception and evaluation of objects. Larger items tend to appear more substantial, labor-intensive, and thus more expensive because they often are.

This principle applies to both furniture and artwork, which is why ChessboArt chess sets can be compared to these items. Their purpose is to adorn and decorate the spaces where they are displayed. Our chess sets measure 80x80 cm, making them larger than many wooden tables and most paintings. They compete with these items in terms of both function and price.

 

Material and Craftsmanship

The amount of wood used in ChessboArt chess sets could suffice to make a table. However, the labor and precision required for our chess sets far exceed those needed for a table.

We strive to give our clients the utmost satisfaction and confidence in their choice, which is why our chess-making process is meticulously planned. At ChessboArt, repetitive tasks are performed by machines. We don't see added value for the client in manually sawing, milling, or gluing under a screw press. We use CNC machines, lasers, saws, and grinders because they are efficient.

However, we see tremendous value in the craftsmanship of an artisan who knows how to prepare the wood, align the grain, perfect the edges and surfaces with a chisel, and then finely sand them. This work is unique, valuable, and visible.

The ratio of machine work to handcrafting in our chess sets is approximately 35%-65%. Does this make our chess sets handmade? We believe it does.

 

Design and Style

ChessboArt chess sets are functional art, akin to beautifully designed furniture. Therefore, artists are responsible for the appearance, design, and aesthetics; chess players ensure the playability and enjoyment of the game; carpenters handle the wood and the construction process; and the entire project is overseen by the creator and founder, Michał Fudalej. The first and ideal chess set hangs in his living room.

 

Luxury and Exclusivity

ChessboArt chess sets embody passion and a unique story of striving for excellence. They are not mass-produced in factories like products from brands such as Ralph Lauren or Amara (yes, they also produce chess sets). When you order a ChessboArt chess set, you are assured it was made in a small workshop in Poland by the chess player Michał Fudalej and his select group of collaborators.

Each chessboard is assigned a unique number, the date it was crafted, the materials used, and the signature of its creator, Michał Fudalej.

 

History

 

When we first started making chess sets, a man came to us asking if we could repair his grandfather's chess set. It held immense emotional value for the owner. Regrettably, we had to refuse because we were unable to carry out the repair.

Since then, we have kept that situation in mind and strive to create our chess sets in a way that they can last for generations. This does not mean that in 50 years they will be in the same condition as today—they are made of wood, so they will not be. However, we believe that with proper maintenance, they can endure for many decades.
